WARNING: THIS COULD GET YOU FIRED AS A PATIENT!
Still here? Alright brave one, read on…
More and more I’m seeing doctors who do not want to have anything to do with Social Security. I even see signs in doctors’ offices saying, “We will not fill out any documents for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).”
Well, what can you, the patient, do about it?
Don’t accept it!
Doctor’s, nurses, PA-Cs ALL have a lot discretion in what they choose to do (even if it against the official policy of their office or clinic).
Here is a sample script that I wrote for one of my Colorado Social Security disability clients:
I don’t give a flip about your policy. This is about my life and my future. If I am denied, the average wait time for a hearing is more than 16 months.
If we leave things to Social Security, chances are they will say I can still work. If that’s the only opinion in the file, I am going to be denied because you conceded the decision to them. And I’ll have a year and half added to my case.
Should I have to go through an extra 18 months because my own doctor wont step up?
Note: use of “flip” is optional.
I can’t guarantee this is going to work. And then there is the whole “fired as a patient” thing. But dammit, they are not going to hide behind “office policy.”
If they don’t think you are disabled, they should say it to you face! And if they think you can’t do full-time work, they need to step up and help!
So, here is the real question: do you DARE say this to YOUR doc?
